No Bail for Man Who Accidentally Shot Himself During Clash Outside Massachusetts General Hospital

A man from Boston is accused of opening fire he grabbed a duty officer's weapon during the altercation Outside Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston appeared before a judge on Wednesday.

Elvis Haughton, aged 46 from Boston, appeared before Boston Municipal Court on Wednesday for an initial hearing without a publicly appointed lawyer due to the strike, according to the district attorney.

Haughton was instructed to remain in custody without bail, awaiting a dangerousness hearing scheduled for June 2nd.

He is charged with aggression and physical violence against an law enforcement officer , unlawful possession of a weapon, holding a category C drug, and obstructing arrest in relation to an attack on a law enforcement officer near Cambridge Street on Tuesday.

The Boston Police Commissioner, Michael Cox, stated that Haughton assaulted an officer near Cambridge Street around 8:45 a.m. on Tuesday and managed to seize the officer's service weapon issued by the department.

The duty officer, during an operation in the region, encountered an individual exhibiting signs of a possible mental health crisis," Cox stated on Tuesday. "In some manner, this person assaulted the officer, managed to seize control of her weapon, and fired at least one shot.

Before his arraignment, Haughton had a mental health assessment, after which the court clinician did not suggest additional evaluations.

The office of the Suffolk District Attorney is looking into the matter.
