Disregard the talk about Roman Anthony needing improvement with his off-speed pitches in the strike zone. He’s prepared for the major league today, and the Red Sox certainly could benefit from having him. However, it will require some maneuvering of the roster to bring him up to Boston.
One straightforward approach might involve moving Ceddanne Rafaela to the infield, transitioning Jarren Duran to center field, and positioning Anthony as the new left field starter. This appeals to me because it retains Ceddanne within the organization during his development phase. Additionally, there’s an appealing narrative element of Anthony stepping into the role of the Red Sox left fielder—a position historically held by numerous legends. However, Boston also has a more intricate choice at their disposal: making a trade. The question then becomes which player they should consider for such a deal.
Currently, Ceddanne Rafaela ranks among the poorest performers at the highest level of baseball. However, his fundamental statistics indicate potential for improvement. Additionally, his defensive skills are exceptional enough that should he manage to reach even average levels as a batter, he would become an extremely valuable asset. Given these factors, he is probably not considered a top prospect in trades, which means the Red Sox might receive relatively modest returns from such deals.
Jarren Duran possesses the greatest potential among the trio of outfielders—evident from his outstanding play at an MVP caliber last season. However, being the oldest, he has less time remaining under his rookie-contract, which is still controlled initially. Trading him could fetch significant talents for the Sox, yet he remains a vital player for the team as well.
Similar to Ceddanne, Wilyer Abreu is youthful and inexpensive, with numerous years of team control ahead. However, unlike Ceddanne, he has already demonstrated effectiveness both at the plate and with his excellent defensive skills in Major League Baseball. Nonetheless, he hasn’t shown consistent success against left-handed pitchers yet. Considering his age and accomplishments so far, he likely holds significant trade value for teams seeking immediate returns.
